Is Random Walling the best choice for you?
Trying to find the materials to make a stone wall can be difficult. Commercially, stone is expensive to acquire in large quantities when you want it artificially cut to specific sizes. A popular choice to overcome this obstacle is to source random walling.
With guillotined random walling, each stone is not cut down to a particular size and is, instead, designed to be natural and random in shape, hence the name. the stone is guillotined to an approximate depth (bed), with varying heights, lengths, and shapes. Included in the bags are small shards of the guillotined stone, these are not waste and can be used as pinning’s. We give an approximate bed width as it is impossible to guillotine to a set width.
Installing Stone Sales Walling:
Once ready to start installing the stone, ensure that you open all the bags and take into consideration that you should have ordered around 15% extra for wastage and selection. Ensure that you intermix the bags/crates/pallets and the layers. DO NOT WORK FROM JUST ONE BAG/LAYER/PALLET at a time. This helps to ensure an even mix of colour and size throughout the project.
Ensure that the front and rear of each piece is free from dust, dirt, sand, or loose particles. When necessary, it can be worth washing the stones. They can be power washed, but the nozzle must be kept a minimum of 300mm from the face of the stones. Acid cleaning agents should never be used on the face of the stones.
If cleaning agents are needed, please select a natural detergent that is non-corrosive and non-acidic to remove build up in problem areas. Always test on a small area before using liberally.
When installing, certain materials will need to be dampened on the back, especially in hot environments. This prevents the stone from pulling the moisture from the cement, allowing it to cure naturally and with a stronger bond.
All new work must be protected during construction and must be designed and built in accordance with good building practices.
While the adhesive is still wet, use a wet sponge to dampen any adhesive on the face if the stone then use a stiff scrubbing brush to remove the excess adhesive before another rinse using a sponge and clean water.
Weather conditions:
When installing random walling stone externally, the correct protection should be taken to cover the installed wall(s) with tarpaulins or temporary shelters to keep inclement weather off. If the weather is hot, damp hessian sacking, or sheets can be used to cover the stone to slow the drying process and help ensure proper adhesion.
